With strong parallels to today, as we are faced with a European Union that is struggling with unity, rulers balancing on the edge of the laws of democracy and a pandemic that has changed the world, the opera is based on the nordic common history, and focuses on powerful women of the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Women, like a golden braid, are intertwined in long chains of knowledge and influence.

With Margrete the First’s Kalmarunion as our starting point, we take a second look at the story and follow the threads that run between queens and women of all trades who contribute to the story of who we are in the Nordic region.
